The Tarn region
Set between Lavaur and Gaillac, our small village
of Ambres is clearly visible from afar,
on top of its gently rising hill in some of the richest agricultural land
of France.
The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of green crops, grape-vines and
vivid yellow fields
of sunflowers - les tournesols. The cottage - together with the church, school
and Mairie -
is in the single main street of the village which finishes in a shady park
and viewing lookout.
This cottage is also close to two of our favourite towns -
Albi - with its magnificent cathedral and large collection of works by Toulouse-Lautrec
and Lavaur - full of the history of the heretics (Cathars) and Simon de Montfort.
The Tarn, like Gascony, is not really a tourist area, so the restaurants cater
more for
a discerning French clientele - and are therefore of quite excellent quality
and value.
This is the region of rose-coloured
houses around shady squares -
hills of green vines and bright yellow sun-flowers -
garlic, cassoulet and the excellent wines from Gaillac
plane-tree lined roads - trumpeters from Versailles playing Bach in cathedrals
-
and the fascinating history of the mediaeval Cathars.
The high village of Ambres is situated just
4 kms above the historic town of Lavaur
and close to the magnificent town of Albi - the circuit of perched villages
including Cordes-sur-Ciel
and the important wine region of Gaillac.
