The
Pyrenees region
Set between the Pyrenees and the Languedoc
- our last cottage is
in the most beautiful and ancient village of Mirepoix - population 3,500 people.
The region is called the Pyrenees-Ariège although Mirepoix is actually
on the plain
about 20 kms from the serious mountains. It has a warm and sunny climate and
is about 40 kms from Carcassonne - 80 kms south of Toulouse - 30 kms from
Foix
and about 90 kms from Andorra and Spain via the N20.
At this cottage you have the opportunity to explore both the exotic mountain
scenery
of the Pyrenees as well as the exciting and historic parts of the Languedoc
such as
Carcassonne, Castelnaudary, Limoux - as well as being only a couple of hours
away from
the quite different experience of the old ports on the Mediterranean - Collioure.
This is the region of brightly
painted houses around mediaeval arcaded squares -
high mountains with snow capped peaks and wonderful views -
the famous sparkling wine which pre-dates champagne - Blanquette de Limoux
high mountain passes - the bloody history of the heretics and the Albigensian
Crusade
- the fascinating history of the mediaeval Cathars and their amazing fortresses.

The 14C classified mediaeval village of Mirepoix is situated
in a diagonal between
Carcassonne and Foix - a complete experience in itself as it is the largest
of our villages
with a range of excellent restaurants - the d'Oc wines of the region - another
centre for the
Tour-de-France on its route through the Pyrenees.
