  The local region around Russan (Ste Anastasie)

 
The fantastic Uzès market - 13 kms away - filling up half the streets and squares in
the town which is one of the best and most colourful markets in the region - where you
can buy almost anything - from the colourful array of fresh produce - 
       
-  to regional specialties such as local ceramics from St Quentin la Poterie and the distinctive Provençale
fabrics which reflect the symbols of this region - the sunflower, the lavender and the olive. 
   
Uzès is full of restaurants, cafés and quality shops.
Watch impromptu jazz and street theatre whilst enjoying lunch under shady plane trees. 
We bought the CD of this excellent jazz group for our cottage.
The landscape around Russan is mainly gentle undulating vineyards, hills and cream stone
villages - and there are many excellent local wineries and co-ops for tasting and buying wine.
The favourite wine of this region is the local Collines-du-Bourdic - just down the road from Russan.
Their extensive vines spread almost up to our village. Visit their Cave for tasting their excellent wines which
have won many medals - although they prefer to remain a Vin-de-Pays.
Although most of the wines of this region are generally Cotes-du-Rhone (right)
there are also several other regional ones - Left - Cotes-de-Nimes
Centre - the very pleasant Domaine-de-Gournier from our own village of Russan -Ste Anastasie.

 One of the best restaurants close by is Au-Fil-de-l'Eau in Uzès just off the Place-aux-Herbes.
It is mainly a fish restaurant - however you can also choose non-fish plates and the food here is excellent.
We have found the local wine Domaine-de-Gournier white goes wonderfully with a fish menu.

And there are many other pleasant places to eat out. This is the Hotel / Restaurant
Les Colombiers near to Remoulins and the Pont-du-Gard. We stay there between cottages
and although it has a normal menu-de-jour - the setting on the verandah is delightful.

Another popular local excursion is to go canoeing down the River Gardon.
You can see from the map above that when there is enough water in the river it is possible to
paddle from Russan to the Pont du Gard - however hiring a canoe at Collias is often better.

 There are many canoe hire companies where you can hire a canoe and
one of the pleasures is taking it down under the Pont-du-Gard where you can also go swimming. 
And of course the the marvellous Pont-du-Gard belongs to the local region as it is only 18 kms away.   
There is also an excellent museum at the Pont-du-Gard showing exhibits explaining the
Left - the original latrines and - Right - methods of construction by the Romans in the 1st Century.
Castillon-du-Gard - one of the typical high Provençale villages not far from Russan with
several excellent restaurants and great views out over the surrounding countryside.
