Looking down on the village of Russan
- showing Gorges and the Garrigues one side of the
river and gentle vines and sunflowers on the village side - the Cevennes in
the distance.
Left - a typical street in the village
- many of the stone houses have big
garden courtyards behind their great arched doors fronting the narrow
streets.
Right - sit down and enjoy a coffee, a glass of wine or a soft
drink in the Place -
- or pop into the little food shop - Alimentation
- to pick up anything you might need.
This is Nathalie who used to be in charge but it is now run by new owners.
The Boulangerie just off the Place for fresh bread and croissants every morning.
Continue on through the Place - looking back at the post office and the food shop

- and view of the Gorges-du-Gardon taken from the highest point in the village -

and it was really enjoyed by everyone there.

The village of Russan (Ste Anastasie)
Russan
is situated on the River Gard (or River Gardon), half way between Uzès
and Nimes in the region
known as the Garrigues. It is a village of about 300 people and is typically
provençal in character
with houses of pale creamy-grey stone and a haphazard roofscape of soft orange
coloured Roman tiles.
It has a large central square shaded by lines of plane trees with a fountain
in the middle.
Our cottage is about 100 metres
up from the square in a small impasse. Most of the streets rise up the
hills
around the square, except for one side which has the church, then an
arched bridge leading over the River Gard
into the Gorges du Gardon and over the garrigues to Nimes.
There are several shops around the square - an Alimentation or general store,
the Post Office, hairdresser, newsagent and the bar / café and
the Boulangerie.
Russan is a lively village with quite a young, permanent population,
so there is
also a creche, kindergarten, and the Mairie.
It is also wonderful walking country. Several designated long distance walking
trails around the
Gorges du Gardon start from our village so it is quite common to see hikers
taking a rest beside the fountain.
Apart from the Garrigues, the countryside around the Russan is gentle and
undulating and mainly planted with
vines for the Côtes de Rhone appellation, sunflowers and asparagus.
There are excellent local wines.
Shopping - larger supermarkets at St Chapte and La Calmette and everything
at Uzès, 13 kms
