The Provence region
The vivid landscape and luminous
light of Provence has inspired artists and writers for hundreds of years.
The Popes in voluntary exile from
Rome have left their history of pomp and grandeur at Avignon and
the Romans loved the blue skies, warmth and sunny landscape - and have left
here some of their most imposing
monuments at Nimes, Arles and the amazing Pont-du-Gard.
Our cottage is in the village of 300 people, Russan (Ste Anastasie), half
way between Nimes and Uzès, right on
the River Gard next to the Gardon Gorges. Our cottage is in a small cul-de-sac
of only three houses, just up
from the village square which has a fountain, plane trees and several shops.
Delightful provençal type villages are scattered throughout the region,
and the outdoor markets in
Provence are some of the largest and most colourful in France.
This is the region of shady local
squares where young and old play Boules under plane trees;
running the bulls; fresh fish from Sête and Côtes de Rhone wines;
untamed Garrigues smelling of wild herbs and lavender; Cézanne and
Van Gogh,
and the absorbing history of the Romans and their incredible monuments.
This house will take
4 people - however it must be noted that
this is by far our smallest cottage and it is possibly more suited for 2 people
only.
The village of Russan-Ste-Anastasie
is excellently situated on the River Gardon
among the vines producing outstanding local wines
- especially from Bourdic.
In this region it is often
far better to be based in a smaller village without all the hassles of
parking
and traffic one can find in the larger centres. Russan is perfectly placed
to explore the
ancient
and historic Roman
towns and sites of Avignon - Pont-du-Gard - Arles - Nimes and Uzès.
