Walking back
past the same cottages in summer where a bit of gardening,
gathering and grass cutting is necessary on this wonderfully fertile hill.

It might look miles from anywhere
so great is the tranquility
up here
- but just down in the valley 3.5 kms down the hill are the twin villages
of Gagnac-sur-Cère and Port de Gagnac - and there are three vibrant
little towns -
Bretenoux 6 kms - Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne 8 kms - and St Céré
12 kms away.
Two other cottages in this village - all set into the beautiful countryside.![]()

Taking the bend in the road which
goes in a loop back to ours - there are fascinating
groupings of cottages and barns with an amazing array of roofscapes as there
is a lot of
restoration currently taking place in the old part of this village.
There are also many barns similar
to our cottage - with the same splayed-out roofs en-lauzes
and with dry stacked walls. As La Teulière is at the very
top corner of the Lot region - the style of
architecture here is in transition with the neighbouring region of the Auvergne.

The village of La Teulière
La Teulière
is a tiny, but very special village situated at an altitude of 1,100 ft
up a pretty hillside
road above the small
villages of Port-de-Gagnac and Gagnac-sur-Cère. The views from here
are
beautiful! You feel quite on top of the world and it is a surprise to
remember that only a few kms
away are busy little towns of Bretenoux, Beaulieu and St Céré.
From the house and all
around there are scenic walks, the surroundings changing with the seasons.
The village itself has a sense
of timelessness. Little has changed in the last two centuries.
As far as we can discover, it was the village of the 'tilers' founded in the
15C -
a thriving little community of about 100 people, many of whom mined the local
schist rock.
During World War 2, La Teulière was a centre for the local resistance
movement.
One of our neighbours now has a living-room in what was once the village hall,
and the two large bread
ovens which used to bake the bread for the whole village are still there.
As well as the few permanent residents, several cottages are holiday homes
for others
who feel that they have discovered one of the loveliest parts of France.
There is an excellent new little supermarché 3.7 kms down the hill
at Gagnac which
sells most things - fruit, vegetables, some meat , wine and groceries.
It is open every morning including Sunday - and most afternoons from 4.30.
There are all shops at Bretenoux, 6 kms away.
