The village of Buis-les-Baronnies

The historic and beautiful village
of Buis-les-Baronnies - nestled in a spectacular setting
of mountains, olive and fruit groves - our cottage is right in the centre
near to the church.

Buis is a vibrant and exceptionally
beautiful Provençale village - there is always
something interesting happening - art exhibitions - films - climbing the Rocher-St-Julien
-
and the Buis-cyclette, the marvellous bike race over the mountains with 2000
participants.

Buis has its own market every Wednesday
- filling almost every street and square -

The big specialties here are olives,
herbs, spices and Provençale fabrics and products -

- and the colourful market extends
to the Allées-des-Platanes - a large Place beside the
river with many cafés and boules courts under the Plane trees (les Platanes).

Leaving our cottage
you are in the Grand Rue full of colourful shops.
Buis has all shops and services,
many cafés and restaurants and two hotels -

The Grand Rue runs into the
historic and beautiful15C Place-des-Arcades
- a lively square with vaulted arcades each side -

- and underneath the arcades are
most of the people and many of the shops -

- also one of
the excellent restaurants in this village - La
Fourchette
where you can enjoy an excellent meal at lunch or in the evenings.

- and just around the corner are
many cafés - an important part of life in Buis -
so sit under a canopy of shady Plane trees or Wisteria and just watch the
world go by -

- or watch some of the street
theatre on market and other days -

- or listen to a lilting gypsy band
playing in the Place and buy their CD which is in this cottage.
Explore the many
little streets past houses bedecked with flowers - especially roses
see the old Ursuline Convent which hosts many art exhibitions - and don't
forget to visit the helpful
Office-de-Tourisme for information on everything in this village and region
-

- or take a turn on the raised
walk beside the river under the canopy of shady Plane trees -

-and watch one of the many
games of boules while your children enjoy the childrens' playground next to
the river.
From
our neighbor's next door roof top balcony there are
spectacular views
of the newly restored church and the amazing mountain scenery all around
-

- and almost everywhere you go, the
Rocher St Julien is visible through the trees.

The village of Buis-les-Baronnies
Buis-les-Baronnies is nestled below and surrounded by breath-taking
pinkish crags of
Baronnies mountains, giving it a truly spectacular setting. With a population
of 2000 people and all
food shops, three small supermarkets, restaurants, bars, a cinema and Tourist
Office, it is a really
charming and friendly village. It has quaint streets and many cafes and
restaurants with the tables out
under the avenues of plane trees or in the ancient arcaded square. There is
an large and colourful
open air market held here every Wednesday where specialties of the region can
be bought.
Alongside the river is a high promenade with many seats overlooking the numerous
boules courts
where young and old play Petanque at all hours.
For people with children or teenagers
there is a local swimming pool, an equestrian centre,
bike hire and a rock climbing school. There are also many walking tours from
the village.
We have called this cottage La Maison des Trois Chapons (the house of the three
chooks or capons)
because our cottage is in the Rue des Trois Chapons which is a very small walking
only street just
off the Grande Rue and near to the church. As this is in the oldest part
of the
village, the title probably goes back to mediaeval times (C.1155).
