Provence local region
The
local region around Buis-les-Baronnies

Although the village of Buis is not particularly
high itself - the surrounding countryside is
spectacular in all directions - yet it is close to Vaison-la-Romaine, Avignon
and Châteauneuf-de-Pâpe.
The local wines are mainly Cotes-de-Rhone-Villages, the Luberon, or Cotes-de-Ventoux.

The wonderfully vivid colours in the high rocks around Buis
change with the time of day -
- and there is a school of rock climbing - escalade
- just outside the village taking beginners to advanced -

- and they also climb the Rocher-St-Julien.
Every springtime the festival of the Illuminations de St-Julien is held - where
200 climbers scale
the Rocher after dark wearing torches on their safety helmets until they outline
the entire rock - they shout OLE back to the village and then slide down ropes
like fireflies.
We were lucky to watch this marvellous happening through our bedroom window.

Two kms up the hill from Buis is the high perched
village of La Roche-sur-le-Buis -
with its pretty winding streets and ruined castle -

- and while up exploring
at La Roche - take time to enjoy a simple lunch
with a spectacular view at the Bar / Restaurant, La Terrasse -

Buis is surrounded by magnificent
walking country - leave straight from the cottage
and take a choice of routes through the valleys or straight up into the high
country.

The entire region is dotted with delightful Provençale villages -
this is Mollans-sur-Ouvèze - which holds a festival of Artists in the Streets every year -

- and then on to Entrechaux with its ruined castle - its vines - and also one of the best
restaurants in the region - St Herbert - run by the same family through generations.

- then a few kms more on
to sophisticated Vaison-la-Romaine - 18 kms from Buis
- famous for its important Roman excavations (see section on sight-seeing) -
its cafe life - and for its
marvellous market every Tuesday - one of the largest and most colourful in Provence.

This is the country of marvellous
ruined castles on cliffs surrounded by vines and mountains
so it is stunningly beautiful in all seasons - but maybe particularly in its
autumn colours -

and it is also the country of unique
landmarks such as the little chapel perched on rock
high above the village at Pierrelongue - just 5 kms from our village of Buis.
