Marciac - a delightful 13C bastide village just 10 kms down the road - with a lovely large
arcaded square and the tallest church tower in the Gers -market day Wednesdays.

Marciac also has several good and reasonably priced restaurants - (left) Le Coin Gourmand
and just around the corner in the main square is the Petit Auberge (right).

Every August Marciac hosts one of the biggest international jazz  festivals
held in France - with a
rtists performing from all over the world.

For a special treat - have lunch or dinner at what we and many of our guests regard as one of the better
restaurants close to our cottages - The Rive Droite - set in an elegant 18C Maison Bourgesoise -

Left - owners Myriam and Phillipe Piton standing at their front door -
Right - inside Myriam will give you a wonderful welcome and Phillipe is the Chef de Cuisine.

The wines of the Gascony are quite a feature of this region of the Gers and
they are very well regarded in France. Above is the Madiran - the chateau, label and grapes
- a very interesting heavy red wine - a bit reminiscent of the early great Australian reds.

Left - there is also the local and very popular Cotes-de-Saint-Mont
Centre - the special Aperitif of the the region which is derived from Armagnac - Floc-de-Gascogne
Right - and the the subtle and excellent Buzet wines.

Take an drive into the Haute Pyrenees - about 45 minutes via Mielan and Trei-sur-Baise
to
the attractive high village of Castelnau Magnoac to have lunch at the Hotel Dupont - see centre
which has been in the same family for 5 generations and serves a very traditional French meal.

The attractive dining room at the Hotel Dupont is always full and cheery in all seasons
including winter for either lunch or dinner in the evening.

A typical sprawling Gascony farmhouse of the region with the ochre coloured exterior
which blends in so well with the surrounding landscape.

Another characteristic Gascony farmhouse
- with soft coloured mud colombage, dark exposed beams and a large attached barn.

Miélan - another small bastide town 6 kms away - with arcaded shops and houses of
colombage - also a magnificent covered market place - market days Thursdays.

Mirande - another small bastide town 10 kms away - with a cathedral, a Victorian bandstand and
Allaire arcaded square - a jolly little place with excellent shopping - market on Mondays.
There is a big festival of country music here every summer - Le Country Musique.

One of the best drives locally is on the Route-des-Bastides - a beautiful high drive
through some of the many bastide villages in the Gers  - with great views of the Pyrenees.
Shown here is a distant view of the ancient village of Bassoues.
Bassoues was laid out in 1280 by the archbishops of Auch to accompany their strong castle
with a 140 ft high donjon which is still here today - seen here from the historic wooden covered market
.  Bassoues is 9 kms from Tillac and has an Armagnac Distillery where you can taste and buy.
