The village of Tillac

The village of Tillac surrounded by fertile hills of maize and cereal crops - farms raising ducks,
geese and turkeys. The abundance of inexpensive local ingredients make this region
one of the best eating areas of France.
The entrance to the village with the arch beside the Bar/ Restaurant - only the arch and tower
remain from the former 13C mediaeval castle. Our cottage is through the arch.
Our arcaded street in Tillac after you walk through the arch - showing the church and tower set in the
garden behind - our cottage is middle left with window boxes of red flowers.

Left - The entrance to the village with the arch beside the Bar/ Restaurant - only the arch and tower
remain from the former 13C mediaeval castle. Right - our cottage second from the left with the red geraniums.

Left - looking back the other way through the arch towards the butcher, the food store and the front garden.
There are plenty of car parking spaces here under the trees. Right - this village and the gardens are always kept
in immaculate condition by the village Communant - M. Francois Ouf - seen here on his tractor.

The Bar/ Restaurant - the Relais de la Tour right beside the arch - has now started up again in 2007
under new management. Left - the back of the restaurant on a normal day looking across from our cottage.

Right - a special lunch held on the day of the Annual Brocante Fair a few years ago.

Looking through the historic 5 metre wide arcades at our front door with all the flowers baskets
Although Tillac is a quiet village there are usually tourists pottering or taking photos.

Micheline & Serge Struhar are doing a terrific job with the Epicerie just across the road from the café
 - where you can buy bread, newspapers, postcards of the village, groceries, deli items,
vegies, farm eggs - plus wine & Armagnac. The butcher next door is excellent too.
The Pyrenees can appear and disappear like a phantom backdrop - on a clear day
they are suddenly visible. This photo was taken just above Tillac at dusk.

Our street from the reverse end near the church looking back towards the arch, clock tower and the café.
There is a back garden with the small summer Office-de-Tourisme
- and gardens with seats and picnic tables.

Left - the village enjoying the Brocante Fair again. Right - a photo taken out of our kitchen window of the wonderful day.

Tillac en fete right outside our front door - shown here is the annual lunch for
The Chase held underneath the arcades.

The village of Tillac

.Tillac, (pronounced Tee-yac), is perhaps the most unusual and interesting of all our villages.
Originally a tiny fortified 13C-14C settlement built earlier than the bastides, it has a unique little principal
street of beautifully arcaded and overhanging houses, quite symmetrical on both sides.
This street has an historic arched clock-tower gate at one end, and an immaculately kept communal
garden with the church and 13C tower at the other end, the only remnants of the original castle.
Our cottage is in the middle of this double sided terrace of ancient houses.

Scenes from the Hollywood film D'Artagnan starring Catherine Deneuve
were filmed right under our windows in Tillac during 2000

Tillac is a small and perfectly kept little village with all basic shopping about 200 metres away -
an excellent butcher and an Alimentation (food shop) which sells all basic supplies including bread, wine,
fruit and vegetables; also post cards of the village and newspapers.
There is also the Post Office, Marie, a small information office, Bar / café and a primary school.
A grant given by the Government enabled our courtyard and street to be restored and paved,
including the 12 foot wide arcades under the houses to make a shady eating out place during summer.
Tillac is is set in a valley surrounded by rolling hills studded with beautiful old Gascon farms
producing maize, wines or cattle.
All shopping at Miélan 6 kms, Marciac 10 kms or Mirande 10 kms away.
