Gascony region
Of all our regions, Gascony is still the most profoundly rural. You feel that little has changed over
the centuries. Located between the towns of Auch and Tarbes, this region has sleepy villages, tiny bastides,
fortresses, churches and bustling small bastide market towns with large arcaded squares and a strong
Spanish influence. Our cottage is in the special 15thC village of Tillac, 10 kms from the border of the
Hautes Pyrenees.
One hours drive south from the village are the Pyrenees with dramatic high mountain
scenery, white houses with dark brown carved shutters and high pitched roofs in picturesque Pyrenean
villages; also several routes to the Spanish border. The new Guggenheim Art Museum in Bibao in Spain;
also the Atlantic coast resorts and the Pays Basque have been a been a big draw card
for many who stay in this region. Gascony is not really tourist country, yet it has
one of the best climates and some of the best food in France.
This is the region of the Three Musketeers - lazy days under wide and shady arcades;
ducks, geese and golden maize; jazz and country music;
Armagnac, Floc and Madiran, Buzet and St Mont wines;
and with an almost theatrical backdrop of snow covered mountains.
The village of Tillac - 38 kms south-west of the cathedral town of Auch
and on the way down to the spectacular Pyrenees mountain ranges - Lourdes
and the Spanish border - also in the centre of the distilleries of Armagnac
and the unique wines of this region - Madiran, Buzet and St Mont.
