The local region around Berbiguières

There is so much to see within 20 kms radius around our village of Berbiguières 
that the immediate region also covers much of the sight-seeing. 

The Sunday morning market at the village of St Cyprien - only 4 kms down the hill from our village
- a good place to stock up on on anything you might need - or to maybe pick up a treasure or two.

High sweeping landscapes are a feature of our side of the river with châteaux and exceptional
 villages on both sides - the other side runs along the fertile valley of the Dordogne.
A canoe trip down the river from La-Roque-Gageac takes you past four châteaux in two miles.

This is very popular and take several hours if you stop for a swim or a picnic en route -

- passing the chateaux of Beynac - seen above - also Castelnaud and Marquessac

 

- you then pass Chateau Fayrac - see left - and then chateau once owned by singer Josephine Baker
- Chateau-des-Millandes which is also open to the public - above right - which is one of
the finishing points where you and the canoe are taken back to your car.

The wines of this region centre on Bergerac and of course a little further away Bordeaux and St Emillion.
Left - visit one of the many caves for wine tasting - this one is at Julien-de-Savignac.
Centre - also visit the wine Chateau-de-Monbazillac to taste their famous dessert wines.

Driving in others directions from Berbiguières there are many other things other exciting attractions.
Seen above are the 15C cloisters of Cistercian Cadouin Abbey - which was founded in 1115.
Close to Cadouin is the beautiful hilltop village of Belvès which was an English stronghold
 in the 13C during the 100 Years War - yet not a real bastide.  Shown here is the impressive 
15C covered market (left) and (right) the perched village narrow streets and mediaeval dwellings.

The Auberge-de-la-Nauze at Fongauffier just below Belvès - about 7 kms away 
 -  the closest restaurant to our cottage which caters for the discerning French instead of the casual tourist.
It is open throughout the year and serves quite excellent cuisine at reasonable prices.

 

A bit further away is the popular restaurant in the pretty village of Trémolat called
Le Bistro-d'en-Face - run by the same owners of the more famous and expensive  Vieux Logis Restaurant
just across the road. - a genuinely Paris type bistro - unusual to find in such a delightful rural setting.
