The village of Berbiguières

Berbiguières from across the fields - our cottage centre right front with brown shutters.
This typical Périgordian village has recently been beautifully restored in loving detail.

This village and surrounds have been classified by the French Minister of Culture & Environment.

At the turn of last century the end house was a Chocolaterie - we have the old photo on the wall.
Our cottage is about 100 metres down a small road off to the right. 

The outer route to our cottage passing beside a low stone wall facing out over the fields
- past our very pleasant neighbours - our cottage is 2nd from the right.

Another way is to go via the upper walking route around the Chateau walls
which can be seen on this aerial photo very clearly

- and then take one of the paved and decorated little ruelles down to the
outer road. This pretty lane runs behind our cottage near the back door leading out
from our back door off the kitchen.

Continue down our road and you will see that Berbiguières is a most beautifully
restored village of the Périgord Noir.

This is just one of the many delightful cottages - 
         
- and some more showing the unusual roof formation of the Périgord - splayed out
at the bottom in almost oriental fashion.
    
- and the lush flowers and vines which are a real feature of this village.

The village of Berbiguières
The entire village of Berbiguières and its surroundings have been classified. 
A particularly charming and friendly village of 180 people, it clusters 
around the the foot of the privately owned château on a quiet road near the part 
of the River Dordogne which is studded with châteaux.
A castle existed on the site of the present château during the 11C, then in the 
Middle Ages the site became a Commanderie or walled military stronghold.
 
The present village follows the form of these ancient plans.
The village has been a place of refuge from persecution at least twice in its history: 
for  the Huguenots (or protestants) around 1685 - and during World War 2 both Jewish refugees 
and Spanish communists hid there, reportedly some in our cottage.
        This area is a delight for children as well as for adults, with its spectacular castles, 
canoeing, prehistoric caves and outdoor museums all within a few kms of the cottage. 
All shopping at at either Siorac-en-Périgord or St Cyprien, both 4 kms away.
